Immune-boosting effects of Massage

Many view Massage as a treat that they get maybe once or twice per year. While treats are nice, Massage Therapy has been researched and proven to have incredible immune-boosting benefits that could help you stay healthy during seasons that your immune system needs a little extra support. How can this be?!

Lymphocytes are a type of white cell that is crucial to the function of our immune systems. Responsible for immune defense, Lymphocytes act to recognize antigens (A toxin or foreign substance that induces the body’s ability to form antibodies), produces antibodies, and destroys any cells that could inflict damage. Massage has been found to significantly increase levels of lymphocytes- keeping you ready for immune system battles yet to come.

The science behind the stress-relieving benefits of Massage is made evident by observing a hormone called cortisol. This hormone is responsible for things like regulating blood pressure and your sleep/wake cycle- but when produced in excess (which is more common than you’d think) it can cause things like memory problems, weight gain, trouble sleeping, headaches, anxiety, depression, and even digestive issues. Massage has been proven to help regulate cortisol levels while raising levels of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine which can elevate your mood, promote digestion, and improve your memory and quality of sleep (happy hormones!). Quality sleep is vital to your body’s health as some of your metabolic processes in your body happen whilst asleep.

Massage boosts the circulation of blood and lymphatic fluid (your body’s “waste management” and infection-fighting system) which can, in turn, help you be more prepared to fend off any unwanted illness.  So in summary: Massage, although relaxing and stress relieving, has proven to be a powerful tool in helping boost the human immune system by increasing levels of lymphocytes, regulating cortisol production, and promoting healthy blood and lymphatic flow.
